Lochter Report – Fluctuating Fortunes at Lochter

fishing

Down Lochter way last week the catch record made interesting reading showing bags which varied between high teens down to 1.

It demonstrated how important it is, as the natural food becomes more plentiful to have the right fly fished at the right depth and retrieved at the right speed. Not an easy prospect. There is nothing more frustrating than to be getting only half hearted pulls while a nearby angler is landing fish after fish.

Ronnie Ewen fished a team of assorted diawl bachs with his usual diligence of energy and he had 18 fish to the net.

Paul Ingram from Newmachar on an evening session struck it lucky somewhat as he solely used a very small single black klinkhammer and had 16 fish including a beautiful 6lb blue which gave a tremendous fight, over in the Muckle Troot.

Davy Wood continued with his tried and tested WSW lure and it didn’t let him down and got him 14 fish for his day.

Bill Ewen had good success with the apps bloodworm as it brought him 12 fish to the net including a fine 10lb specimen. Alistair Fergus also had 12 fish this time on a mixture of fabs, wets and diawl bachs. Jim Gilmour did well on his usual Saturday session getting 11 fish on either the WSW or cats whisker lure.

Fishing buddies, Peter Wilson and Bill Bain both did equally well by bringing 11 fish to the net mostly on lures.

Mike Jack had a 50/50 sort of day as he had 5 fish on dry flies and then 5 on traditional wets so all in all a very satisfying days fishing. It was nice to see Jim Brown returning to the angling fray after his latest hiatus and he did well getting 7 fish on lures.

It is a great time of year to be out enjoying the sport we love.
